Fiction Writing
“Extremely well-written with subtle story lines and great openings that immediately engage the reader. I liked very much the style of “In the Field” and thought the dialogue was perfect for the main characters. A story for young-adult girls, I loved the humorous listing of physical characteristics of the boy and girl from the girl’s point of view. On the brink of adulthood the boy and girl find a place in a rural field that represents to each of them “the centre of the universe”, a place where differences can be forgotten and built-up armour dispelled. Poetic perhaps, but great for the intelligent reader.” – Judge’s comments from The Writers’ Union of Canada 15th Annual Writing for Children Competition
“This one is a real heartbreaker…an example of the separate world in which children live and how life’s major (and minor) events can deeply affect them to an extent that the adults are often unaware of as they are busy dealing with their own lives. I actually had tears in my eyes at the end of this one and when a story can affect me that deeply on an emotional level and the writing technique doesn’t distract me from going there, I know it is good.” – Judge’s comments from 2012 Creative Keyboards Writing Contest
“The author of this story draws on the very real potential for disaster, even in those lovely places where we seek diversion, to remind protagonist and reader alike that we are not as alone as we may sometimes think. Come along for a leisurely excursion on horseback. See where it takes your heart.” – Judge’s comments from 2011 National Capital Writing Contest

Workshops
“I enjoyed the workshop and felt encouraged to apply to more contests.” – Workshop participant in Ottawa, ON
“I really liked your mini-workshop and got out of it the information, focus and direction I was hoping for. I particularly liked your suggestion of taking a methodical approach to submitting to contests. I’ve found that the submission process can be a bit fraught because there’s ego, hopes and payment(!) tied up in it. I take off my hat to your ‘year of contests’.” – Workshop participant in Ottawa, ON
