Here are some reading / writing-related questions that have come up over the last few months on which I’d be interested to have your thoughts and opinions. In no particular order:
(1) Will you pay to read the Ottawa Citizen (or National Post, or similar newspaper) online? Here in Ottawa, the Citizen has introduced a pay meter system. You get 10 free stories a month, after which they ask you to pay to read more. If you’re a print subscriber you can read as much as you like. Thoughts? Opinions?
(2) Would you return a book? You’d return a sweater that didn’t fit or a dress that was poor quality. You’d return a pair of jeans just because they weren’t quite what you expected. Would you return a book that you waited and waited for, from an author you really loved, because, when you started reading it you were extremely disappointed?
(3) I write resumes as a big part of my current “living” but, is it OK to take it step further? If a job you were applying for had a set of questions attached to it as part of the application process would it be OK to pay someone to write those for you? What about a set of questions for a university application? It is acceptable to hire a writer to answer those on your behalf?
Do you have any writing / reading related questions that would generate discussion and, possibly, call for some ethical interpretation? If so, please share them and also share your thoughts on the above questions.
