For a start, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens. Brown paper packages tied up with strings. Also, definitely, wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings. And, not to be forgotten, snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes, followed closely by silver white winters that melt into springs.
And while we’re talking music, at this time of year I also love “O Holy Night”. And “The Messiah”. And “Joy to the World” (but only sung a certain way). And also “Old Toy Trains” but – due to an unnatural exposure during childhood – mostly the version sung by Nana Mouskouri .
In terms of food, there’s nothing like a bowl full of bright clementines on the table. My son asked me “why do we have clementines at Christmas?” and I said “Because we do!” Also gumdrop cookies – so Christmassy. And cinnamon buns and fruit trifle for Christmas breakfast. And – yes, I know this is strange – but the tacos we have for dinner every Christmas Eve.
Speaking of Christmas Eve; my favourite part of the holidays hands down, no doubt about it.
I also love snow (sorely lacking this year).
I love cutting down our Christmas tree at Thomas Tree Farm. This is a tradition we’ve created for our family and I can’t believe we didn’t do it when I was growing up.
I love skiing in and around the holidays.
I love my boys and being with them.
And I, of course, love opening a few new good books (and giving away a few good books too!)
Those are the things I love about Christmas. I hope you get all the things you love about Christmas this year….
